Semâ is a content of Turkish customs, history, belief and culture as well as the inspiration of Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi (1207 – 1273).
The sema ceremony represents the end of the entire mystical journey of a spiritual ascent through love, in which the dervish leaves his soul and brings the truth and arrives as “Perfect”. Then, he returns from these spiritual journeys as a person who has reached maturity and perfection in order to love all creatures, regardless of faith, class or race, and to serve all creatures.
With the headscarf (the tombstone of his ego), the white skirt (the shroud of his ego), the dervish is spiritually born into the truth, takes off his black cloak and journeys through the stages of Sema to spiritual maturity throughout his life. The Sema holding her arms crossed represents the number one in every age and bears witness to the oneness of Allah.
